I never heard of chiropractic until I was 15 when I met Jacob. His parents are both chiropractors and have an amazing practice in Cardiff. To be honest, I didn’t really know what chiropractic was other than it could help with back pain. As I learned more and more about it and started getting adjusted, I felt so intrigued and curious about how a simple adjustment could lead to so much healing in the body. All my debilitating migraines – gone. Low back pain – gone. I was amazed, but never thought about it as a future career choice.
When the time came to choose a major for college, I debated back and forth with what to choose. I was torn between going into business or going into the medical field. I knew I loved the body and loved helping people, so one day my mom suggested nursing. I sat with the idea for a few days and finally decided it would be a good fit for me. I wanted to be an advocate for health and to help people heal.
I got into my #1 school: Point Loma Nazarene University majoring in nursing. My first year I was in prenursing – chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, etc. I absolutely fell IN LOVE with the body. I became so excited and felt like I was in the perfect field. The next year, I applied and got accepted into the nursing program. 3 weeks into clinicals, I started feeling uneasy about my decision. I wanted to be an advocate for health and wellness, but it kept feeling like I had no say in anything. The doctor would make all the major decisions and the nurse would take care of the patient in the mean time.
Nurses are angels. Absolute angels. As I spoke to my friends in the program, they had a certain excitement about the field that I felt I was missing. I never felt “called” to nursing, it was just a choice I made because I was interested in the body. I wanted so badly to feel as passionate about nursing as my fellow students, but just didn’t.
At the perfect timing, Jacob’s family came down to San Diego to hear Dr Jim Sigafoose, DC speak. I joined along and was blown away by what he said. He spoke about the body’s amazing power to heal itself and how the chiropractic adjustment helps by removing any interferences in the body to allow the body to do the healing. At that moment, everything just clicked. It felt like he was speaking straight to me. THIS is what I had been searching for and it was right in front of me all this time!!
The next day at school, I changed my major to nutrition and started on my path to becoming a chiropractor. I am so happy with my decision because it feels authentic to me. I did not feel connected to nursing like my other classmates, I felt like an outsider in my beliefs and passions. I feel at home with chiropractic and so passionate about what I do now.
