If you’re thinking about becoming a chiropractor (YAY!), it’s important to choose the school thats right for you.
There are 17 chiropractic colleges in the United States, but many more throughout the world including in New Zealand, Spain, and the UK. When starting the search for a chiropractic college, it’s important to narrow down what you want in your experience.
Obviously, I’m biased to Life West, but when I was looking for a chiropractic college I made my choice based on these criteria:
Chiropractic is not just about neck and back pain. I can’t emphasize this enough. Chiropractic is about whole body wellness and health by working directly with your nervous system to strengthen your body’s ability to heal and function.
There are certain schools that only focus on the neck and back pain aspect of chiropractic, which I believe is a disservice to the full potential of your career as a chiropractor. Then there are other (very few) schools that focus on the beautiful philosophy of healing and supporting the body through chiropractic care.
I would highly recommend going to one of the schools that teach chiropractic principles and philosophy so that you can be the best doctor you can be. These schools are few and far between, but in the US they are:
- Life West Chiropractic College – Hayward, CA
- Life University – Murrieta, GA
- Sherman Chiropractic College – Boiling Springs, SC
The best way to get an idea of your future school is to visit. When you visit, you can actually experience a day in the life and the vibe of the school. I can’t tell you how many times people have visited other schools then have come to Life West and applied on the spot and I see them in the halls the start of the next quarter.
Life West’s environment is created by the students. The second you walk on campus you can literally feel the love. What makes Life West different from any other graduate school out there is that we share and give everything. There is virtually no competition. We share notes, quizlets, articles, etc. We’re in this program together and here to support each other.
As with everything, what you put into it, you get out of it. So if you choose to get involved, your experience will be wildly different (and in my opinion better). At Life West, we have over 20 different clubs ranging from functional neurology to essential oils to animal chiropractic.
Obviously this is personal preference. Being from San Diego, it was important for me to be relatively close to home. I encourage you to visit each of the areas before you make your decision.
Hayward, CA is in the “heart of the bay” when in actuality it should be called “the heart of the Bay Area traffic”. Hayward is about 45 minutes from San Francisco and it is so fun to head into the city on the weekends. In Hayward, you can enjoy beautiful hikes, a wide variety of cuisine, and great weather.
Most chiropractic graduate programs are 3 – 3.5 years year round on the quarter system. At Life West, that’s 12-14 quarters. We have 2 one week breaks (Spring and Fall) and 2 three week breaks (Summer and Winter). It is an intense program, but so worth it. Chiropractic College, anywhere you go, will be a vigorous and stressful journey, but the growth, friendships, and knowledge gained is priceless. After 12/14 quarters thus far, I wouldn’t change a second of my experience.
